Hail

As it names implies, hail insurance provides coverage against loss of yield due to hail damage. Hail insurance is not a Federal Crop insurance program and because of that has some major differences.  One major difference is that each individual insurance company sets it’s own rates and these rates vary by individual townships. With Hail insurance you also can choose specific fields to insure and can insure them at different levels. Hail insurance is quoted in $100 per acre increments but can be purchased in any amount that you wish as long as it does not exceed the value of the crop.

Hail insurance can also be purchased with a wide variety of deductibles to fit your needs. There are choices ranging from no deductible, percentage deductibles, disappearing deductibles, and numerous others. Each type of deductible changes when you will collect on a loss, and the premiums reflect these changes. High deductible policies have lower rates, while no deductible policies are the most expensive.

With each company setting it’s own rates, you can save some money by shopping around for your hail policy. However, price should not be the only factor when purchasing hail insurance, other factors to consider are the financial stability of the insurance company and the quality of adjusters each company uses.  Midwest Ag Insurance maintains strong working relationships with several well respected hail insurance companies.  Jon will help you find the right level of coverage, deductible, and insurance company that fits with your farm’s needs.
