Group Risk Protection differs from traditional crop insurance programs in that it does not use Actual Production History, but instead uses the county average for the yield. If
the county yield falls below the trigger level then you collect, and is not dependent on the acual yields of your farm. GRP offers high levels of coverage for low premium levels, but does not remove as much
risk as the typical crop insurance program. An example of this is if your farm received hail damage but the hailstorm did not cover enough of the county to drop the county average.
You could potentially have a complete loss but not collect. There are some situations in which GRP is a viable option, but it is not for every producer.
